Exchanging yokes

Jesus tells me that he is Safe. Gentle. Lowly in heart.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30

I believe him.

So I obey him.

I am coming to Him with my heavy burdens. I am exchanging my yoke for his.

How do I do this?

From the passage it seems that I must:

  • Repent of living like God is irrelevant.
  • Become like a little child in my heart… Vulnerable. Believing. Listening.
  • Learn from Jesus. Learn his heart. Be bonded and yoked to him alone.
  • Accept that he alone is Source of everything I need.

His yoke implies that we will work together. What is his work?

Oh… so much!

But it is all his work. Work that he says in John’s gospel he will accomplish in and through me as I abide in him.

I must simply believe and abide.

What do I get out of this? The most important thing I want… rest for my soul. Real inner rest.

Thank you Master. I come to you.

Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” John 6:29

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. John 15:4
